Led by poet Laurie Donaldson

This welcoming, low-pressure workshop is designed for absolute beginners, anyone who thinks they “don’t really get” poetry, or those curious to try writing for the first time. Together we’ll explore poetry as something alive, accessible, and already part of everyday life – from song lyrics to slogans – rather than something distant or intimidating.

Through discussion, listening, and simple creative exercises, participants will discover how poetry works: how sound, rhythm, imagery, and structure shape meaning and emotion. You’ll be guided in reading poems with confidence and experimenting with writing your own, using prompts, playful constraints, and collaborative activities.

By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a fresh perspective on poetry, practical tools for reading and writing it, and the confidence to keep exploring. No prior experience needed – just curiosity.
